2nd Annual Ukes for Kids SF Bay Area ‘Ukulele Contest will be held on Sunday August 2nd 2015 at the San Mateo County Fair ground during the 20th Annual San Francisco Bay Area Aloha Festival (http://www.pica-org.org/alohafest/) at the Educational Exhibit Area stage from 11:00 am - 1:00.

Contestants are required to attend the Preparation Session which is scheduled for Saturday July 18th at DaSilva 'Ukulele in Berkeley. In the Preparation Session the contestants will present their contest song to the contest judges and mentors and will be given feedback on all aspects of the judging criteria. If there are more registrations in a division than available contest spots these sessions will be used as a means of selecting the contestants for the contest on August 2nd.

    1) Solo 13 years and younger
    2) Solo 14 years to 17 years
    3) Vocal 17 years and younger. 
Prizes
1st place for all divisions: New KoAloha 'Ukulele. 1st place plaque. Perform winning presentation on the main Aloha Festival stage. Other 'ukulele festival performances.  Prize Package
2nd place for all divisions: 2nd place plaque. Prize Package
3rd place for all divisions: 3rd place plaque. Prize Package

Event Goals
• Provide a means for contestants to showcase their talents, develop relationships and learn from each other

• Focus on nurturing the musical talent of our young ‘ukulele enthusiasts.

• Ho’omau (perpetuate) the ’ukulele and build the ‘ukulele community with focus on our keiki (kids)

• Create dialog with the ‘ukulele community to help understand how the Ukes for Kids SF Bay Area can better serve, support and integrate with ‘ukulele and music community.
 
 
Registration
Registration is free and available online @ http://www.ukesforkids.com/contestreg.aspx. Registrations will be accepted on a first come basis until we reach capacity.  If there are more registrations in a division than available contest spots the Preparation Sessions will be used as a means of selecting the final contestants for the contest on August 2nd. If this happens contestants will be informed if they have been selected for the contest by Sunday July 25.

When / Where
Saturday August 2nd 2015 at the San Mateo County Event Center 1346 Saratoga Drive, San Mateo, CA. Contest will be held in the Educational Exhibit Area at 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.  Required contest Preparation Session is being held at DaSilva 'Ukulele in Berkeley CA (2547-8th Street #28, Berkeley, CA) from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm.  More information on this regarding times and such will be sent to registered contestants.

Performance Rules
All Divisions:
 
  • Contestants are allowed to perform one song with a maximum of three minutes
  • Contestants are to perform solo with no special effects. Contestant’s instrument will be amplified either using contestants instrument’s internal pickup or an instrument microphone
  • Song choice is to the discretion of the contestant. Song name and composer must be provided at the contest Preparation session and finalized, if changed, two weeks prior to the contest
Division #1) Solo 13 years and younger and Division #2) Solo 14 years to 17 years
 
  • Judging criteria: 0-10 points will be awarded for each of the following performance criteria: a) stage presence b) strumming, rhythm and picking c) difficulty of song d) creativity and originality e) overall
Division #3) Vocal 17 years and younger
 
  • Vocal performance must be accompanied by ‘ukulele.
  • Judging criteria: 0-10 points will be awarded for each of the following performance criteria: a) stage presence b) vocal ability c) strumming, rhythm and picking d) creativity and originality e) overall
Rest of the Year
  We consider the actual contest just as part of the contest program.  We support the contestants for the entire year after the contest by offering free workshops with our Judges and Menotors and other Bay Area 'Ukulele instructors.
